US and Canadian Stock Market Hours
The NYSE and NASDAQ are the top two US exchanges, both headquartered in New York City. All are open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ITS T. Both markets close for nine federal holidays per year, including New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas.
The Toronto Stock Exchange, or TMX Group, based in Toronto, is also open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ITS T. It closes 10 holidays a year, including New Years Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victory Day, Canada Day, Civic Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, and St. Stephen. Stock Market Hours in Europe
Euronext, based in Amsterdam, is open from 8 am to 5:40 pm Central European Time (CET). It is closed for six holidays a year, including New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labor Day, Christmas, and St. Stephen. The Euronext exchange has also changed the schedule for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
The Zurich-based SIX Swiss Exchange is open from 8:30 am to 5:20 pm CET. It is not open on 12 public holidays of the year, including New Years, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Pentecost Monday, Christmas Eve, Christmas, Saint Stephen and New Year’s Eve.
London-based London Stock Exchange Group is open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or British Summer Time (BST). It closes eight holidays a year, including New Years Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, an early May holiday, a spring holiday, a summer holiday, Christmas, and Saint Stephen. The exchange has also changed the schedule for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Asia Stock Market Hours
While the NYSE, NASDAQ and TMX Group exchanges do not close for lunch, many Asian markets do. These include the Tokyo Stock Exchange in Tokyo, which is open from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Japan Standard Time (JST). The Tokyo Stock Exchange is closed for 22 public holidays a year, including New Years Day, market holidays on January 2 and 3, the day of coming of age, the national founding day, the Emperor’s Birthday, Spring Equinox, Showa Day, Constitution Day, Green Day, Children’s Day, Sea Day, Mountain Day, Respect for the Elderly Day, Autumn Equinox, Day Sports, Labor Thanksgiving Day and Market Holiday on December 31st.
Both the Shanghai Stock Exchange, based in Shanghai, and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, based in Shenzhen, China, are open from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. China Standard Time (CST). Both are closed for 15 public holidays a year, including New Years Day, five days for the Spring Festival in February, the Qingming Festival, Labor Day, the Dragon Boat Festival, two days for the Middle Festival. Fall and four days for National Days in October.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange, based in Hong Kong, is open from 9:30 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm Hong Kong Time (HKT). It is also closed for 17 holidays per year, including New Years Day, three days for the Lunar New Year, the Qingming Festival, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labor Day, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Day of Establishment of the Special Administration Region, three National Days, two days for Christmas and New Years.
The Mumbai-based Bombay Stock Exchange is open from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm India Standard Time (IST). It closes 14 holidays a year, including Republic Day, Mahashrivati, Holi, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti, Good Friday, Ram Navami, Id-Ul-Fitr, Bakri Id, Independence Day, Ganesh Chaturthi, Muharram, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali, Gurunanak Jayanti and Christmas.
